How to Start a Franchise Business Without Start Up Costs

Franchises, which are a way of recreating a successful brick and mortar business to a new location. Last time I walked through a popular shopping mall it seemed all the stores were either branches or franchises. At first glance, franchises are a perfect self-employment solution. The franchisor does a feasibility study, approves the store location, kits it out, trains the staff, supplies the raw materials / stock, and quality controls the process.

The Franchise model has systems in place to recreate a successful business.

Look at McDonalds for example. Their systems are so tested and refined that the entire place can be run by high school kids. The result, the same burger is created anywhere you go, and if you like the burger you can come to rely on that.

The bottom line is if you want to open a business in the high street and succeed, it had better be a franchise:

My two friends bought a franchise for a pile of money they had to borrow and pay back. We were so excited the day the doors opened six years ago. I will not mention names but it has a lot to do with chicken. Their takeout took a while to ramp. Within two years, they started making drawings. After four, they were finally able to afford a holiday.

Disaster struck in year five when they discovered (or rather forgot) they were due for
an upgrade. It was a case of do it or lose it. The franchisor had tweaked the brand and they had to close for two weeks and rip out the shop fittings. This cost was all the money they had managed to save for a house.

The biggest problem with the franchise

The main issue with a franchise business is how much money you have to risk and tie up.

If you want to open a popular franchise you are looking at upwards of a million dollars and depending on the franchise it could be required that you don’t borrow that money. Even some of the smaller vendor style franchise businesses you are looking near $20,000 US.

This unfortunately takes the majority of us regular folk out of the game.

What if there was a way to get the same repeatable proven systems of the franchise model without the investment?

There are many work-from-home business models with minimal set up costs and affordable license fees. Profits are generally excellent to good. You could work less hours, or work hard and make twice as much as a franchise. These innovations are powered by technology and business models that work outside brick and mortar. Without the high cost of brick and mortar business this opens up the door for innovative companies to provide excellent business opportunities without the traditional investment.

Why Working for Yourself is the Only Way to Live

Have you ever pictured the opportunity to shape your destiny? A life where you call the shots and live on your own terms? Are you tired of renting your life out to others? Does your boring job drain the life out of you? Well, you are not alone. Many people have the same dream, but just don’t have the courage to go out and grab life by the reins. Sure, entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. It requires discipline, motivation and investment. There will be stressors and setbacks. Yet, the sense of accomplishment you receive is more than worth all of the effort you put into it. Stop working on someone else’s dream, and pursue your own. Here are a few more reasons why you should consider being your own boss.

Work from anywhere

There are days when you just don’t feel like working in the same, cramped cubicle passing by similar faces you see everyday. Why not work from anywhere? As an entrepreneur, you get to decide if you want to work at your local coffee shop with any pastry you prefer–so much better than the company cafeteria or vending machine.   The next week, you might be sitting on a beach in Costa Rica with your laptop or skiing and working out of Whistler, B.C. You can essentially work from any location with Internet access. Isn’t that a much more exciting prospect?

Create the salary of your dreams

The only limit to your success are the ones you put on yourself. At a 9-to-5 job, your employer decides how much you make and whether or not you get a raise. You might go five years or more without getting any wage increases. Sure, you might make a comfortable living on a predictable salary–but, in today’s world, you never know if your company may go under or you get laid off. You might work over 80 hours a week and save every penny.   Yet, you might also be divorced with kids and a mortgage. As an entrepreneur, you can set your salary. You might decide, “I need $4,000 a month to be happy,” or you can say “$5,000,000 is all I need to retire.” Don’t let other people decide your numbers.

You don’t have to conform

You know what it’s like going to the office day in and day out. You must get your hair cut a certain way, you must have a specific look, you need to purchase work clothes, you have to look happy even when you’re not, you need to speak a certain way. It’s enough to make you mad. When you work for yourself, you can have a mohawk and no one would care.   The most beautiful part of it all is you can be yourself. You no longer have to wear slacks or khakis everyday, in fact, you can work in your skivvies surrounded by your cats if you like. If you enjoy exercise, you can do so when you feel like it. Try asking your boss for an hour off at 10 a.m. to work out and see how well that boils over.

You can live outside the box

You don’t have the restraints of standard work hours. If you want to work at night and play during the day, you can! You don’t have to worry about your reputation at the office. Want to attend pool parties all summer? Do it! Want to visit Trekkie conventions throughout the nation? Nothing is stopping you. No need to worry about asking for time off. You set your hours and your schedule.   Are you convinced that you should set your own hours and salary doing what you love? Are you ready to break off that employer ball and chain?
